Last Week of "Vacation"

It's hard for me to believe that I am down to my last week of vacation. Starting next Monday, I am back to work. However, for the next few months, I will be doing my normal job duties from home instead of from the office.

I realize how fortunate I am to be given the opportunity to work from home, but I also know that it is going to be a challenge to balance caring for my child with managing my job responsibilities both effectively and efficiently. I am excited about embarking on this new journey, but I have a feeling I am in line for a very wild ride!

Check out the video below:

Where does time go? Porter is nearly 2 weeks old now, and it seems like we just brought him home from the hospital. I guess time really does fly when you're having fun... or when you're sleep deprived!

Daddy & His Baby Boy

With Porter being a night owl, Brian and I have been working hard to get him on a more conducive schedule. The boy just likes to sleep when the sun is up!

Proud Papa

Brian is definitely in love! For a man who never cries, when he saw his baby boy for the first time, the tears just fell.

Porter looks so much like Brian. Their expressions are very similar; it is just amazing. Since I really did the majority of the work in having Porter, I feel that I should get the credit on his cuteness! However, truth be known, he's Brian's kid.

Great Grandma's Blanket

Porter is definitely one loved baby! His Great Grandma Gauder made him a beautiful, green blanket that he just loves to snuggle in!

With her being a red head too, Porter has inherited some of her feisty spirit that we love so much!

Memory Keeping

I have resigned myself to the notion that I will never scrapbook. Although I love scrapbooks, and I love the people who make scrapbooks, scrap-booking is just not in my blood. Thank goodness that if you aren't crafty, you can be techy! I love having this blog! Otherwise, I would probably have very little recorded for Porter's early years. Poor kid!  Here are some random pictures of Porter today:

Porter just brings such peace to our household. Even when he is screaming, and he does scream, everything is just so much more harmonious with him around.

First Doctor's Appointment

Today, Porter had his first doctor's appointment. Everything went well, but he has lost a little too much weight, so we have begun supplementing with formula. It seems to be working though, and his energy has gone up.

Poor Kid...

Brian and I bought a digital camera a few years ago because we were certain we would use it all the time. For the last few years, the camera hasn't been out of the box more than a handful of times! I am happy to say that now that Porter is here, our camera has finally met its purpose. I cannot stop taking pictures of this kid!

He's so dog gone cute!

Coming Home

After two days in the hospital, we were definitely ready to bring our little man home! I just love his hair!

I guess red heads really ought to stick together! Here's Porter chillin' with his Grandpa Gauder:

I'm Ready to Meet My Baby!
Leaving for the Hospital
It looks like we're going to meet our little man sometime in the next several hours! My water broke around 2AM and we're currently at Akron General Hospital waiting for the fun to begin. I can't wait to hold my baby!

Monkey in a Wagon

At the the family baby shower held on the 6th of March, Porter received 2 gifts that I will cherish for the rest of my life, a monkey and a wagon. Both of these treasures were handmade by Porter's Grandma and Grandpa Gauder.

Porter's Monkey Handmade by Grandma Kaye

The monkey was made by my step-mom, Kaye, and it is absolutely incredible! If you know Kaye, you know she is artsy, creative, highly-skilled at all she does, ingenious, and borderline eccentric. This monkey definitely captures her essence! He is made of mink fur, unusual buttons, and most importantly, love. Although he was made for Porter, I can't seem to put him down. Although I have been criticized for not having a sentimental bone in my body, I truly love this toy, and hold it as one of our family's most precious belongings.

Equally of priceless value is Porter's wooden wagon made by his Grandpa Gauder. For those of you who know my father, you know he is precise, calculated, adept at all he puts his hand to, resourceful, innovative, and unable to do anything without vision, foresight, and skill. The wagon he made for Porter uses the wood from the wooden ledge of the house Kaye grew up in, and the house Brian, Porter, and I will eventually inhabit. Of course, this wagon is weighted to hold loads exceeding 600 lbs.  Anything less than that would be an insult my father's craftsmanship!  The back of the wagon is of particular significance to me. It is just beautiful as you can see from the picture below.

Porter's Wooden Wagon Made by Grandpa Gauder

Having exceptional parents is a blessing I do not take flippantly. Other than Brian and Porter (who I am hoping will make his first appearance in the next few days), my parents are the most important people in my life. As I hold their gifts to Porter as precious treasures, I hold my relationship with them, their example, and their wisdom to be utterly invaluable.

Baby Showers!

Brian and I have been very blessed with an incredible family, terrific friends, and fabulous co-workers. Over the last couple of weeks, we have been absolutely spoiled by the love, generosity, and thoughtfulness of these three groups of people, and we couldn't be more thankful. At both where I work (OHDELA), and where Brian works (Smucker's), we were treated to two awesome showers by our co-workers and our friends. Both showers were amazing, and a lot of fun! We were just blown away by the kindness extended to not only us, but to our baby boy. We are just so thankful to all who took part.

On Saturday, March 6, 2010, Brian and I were given the privilege to attend another baby shower, this one thrown by our families. I wish I were a better writer so I could properly express how truly incredible this shower was to us. I will remember it for the rest of my life. It was just amazing.

As you can see from the picture above, the theme of this shower was monkeys. It was just awesome! Our cousin, Mary Ann, made us this oh-so-adorable diaper cake!

We were just spoiled by our family members and friends at this shower. The kindness that was extended to the three of us will never be forgotten. The day wasn't just special because we receive an enormous amount of darling baby goodies (although that was pretty cool), it was special because we could really feel the love of those who were around us. There was just an atmosphere of love and support that I still haven't been able to wrap my head around. My heart is full of gratitude to all of those who attended and offered up their time and energy to make this shower so special.

Preparing for Porter

It's hard to believe that we're about 2 weeks away from meeting our little man. There is still a lot to be done before his arrival! We've been working hard on getting the nursery completed. When we moved in, this room was a bit rough. Since our walls are made of plaster, Brian had some patching to do. Also, we had to prime and paint the ceilings and the walls. Here's the finished product:

I love these balloons! We received them at a shower that Smucker's threw for us!

Here's another angle:

Brian loves nautical themes, and I love palm trees and monkeys. It's an odd combination, but it seems to be the theme of Porter's Palace!

Also, I just love Porter's vintage life preserver. It was a lucky find at Pottery Barn Kids!

Here's Keata Bear keeping guard.
